It's the Start of a New Revolution, and Tara Ijai Is the Leader
Just days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order where he banned people from several countries entry to the United States I figured now would be a better time than ever to publish an interview with an incredible Muslim-American woman I met back in 2016.
The order states, "I hereby suspend entry into the United States, as immigrants and nonimmigrants, of such persons for 90 days from the date of this order." Specifically, the order targets people from countries originally listed by the Obama administration as terrorist hotbeds -- Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.”
Each week, I am an American introduces you to an exceptional American working to make his or her community a better place.
Meet a Muslim woman who sees the world through heart-shaped glasses
Tara Ijai was 28 when she converted to Islam and chose to wear a hijab, a head covering traditionally worn by Muslim women.
Two months later, on Sept. 11, 2001, her faith made her a target.
Ijai’s father called her in Arizona and cried when he asked her not to wear her hijab. He was afraid someone might hurt her.
But Ijai told him, "I chose this. I believe in this."
CHANNEL 12 NEWS PHOENIX
How would you like to be part of a revolution? A movement that embraces our similarities and focuses on love?
A Phoenix-area company just might be selling what you're looking for.
Tara Ijai was having a bad day a few months ago. Hoping to cheer her up, her brother sent her a picture of a guinea pig wearing heart-framed sunglasses. "I decided I'm going to make a choice to choose to live," said Ijai.
That picture sparked an idea: If seeing that furry animal in heart-shaped sunglasses made her smile, why not do the same for others?
Ijai decided to pass out what she calls "love glasses" to dozens of people. The message was simple: Choose to see the world with love in your heart.
The world sometimes can be a harsh and cold place, but there are individuals determined to see life through a better lens, and they are ready to create a revolution of peace.
This point of view is a bold statement now that the U.S. has elected as president a person who has used hateful rhetoric against immigrants, Muslims, Mexicans, African-American communities and many people who are outside the ‘old white male’ power clique.
